A bit more about me.
My work explores the principles of health, wellbeing, and mastery that transcend capabilities and domains. I've learned that whether someone is trying to qualify for the Olympics, break ground in mathematical theory, launch a business, craft an artistic masterpiece, or raise a family, many of the practices underlying sustainable success and wellbeing are the same, supported by scientific evidence, and available to everyone.
I regularly write about the above in my column with Outside Magazine. I am also author of the books, The Passion Paradox: A Guide to Going All In, Finding Success, and Discovering the Benefits of an Unbalanced Life, and Peak Performance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, And Thrive with the New Science of Success. These books explore the art, science, and practice of productive passion and peak performance. I strive to make all of my writing thought-provoking, accessible, and actionable.
My coaching practice is all about intimately partnering with clients to apply the principles about which I write. My coaching informs my writing and my writing informs my coaching.
I live in Oakland, California, with my wife Caitlin, our son, and our two cats. I'm an avid exerciser and outdoor enthusiast; I do almost all of my best thinking on the trail. My prior experience includes working for the international consulting firm McKinsey and Company, the National Economic Council, and studying public health at the University of Michigan.
